![]() The deposit was first worked for gold from 1882, with the oxidised ore discovered to be underlain by copper-bearing ore. The Lake George mine was located at Captains Flat, 45 kilometres south-east of Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory and 35 kilometres from the town of Bungendore in New South Wales, from where a railway connection was established in 1939.
